Dreaming in Düsseldorf
Let’s talk about dreaming in Düsseldorf. I’ve been to Düsseldorf Germany twice. Both trips were for work events but that didn’t stop me from seeing some sights. If you know me at all, you know that I can’t sit still. I try to do something touristy on every work trip. It’s just in my nature. I’ve never seen any other part of Germany but if Düsseldorf is any indication, I’m sure I’d love it!
Düsseldorf Altstadt
The square is where it’s at. Commonly known as Düsseldorf Altstadt (old town). It is a bustling hot spot for tourists. I found it to be the perfect place to get a little history, some great food and spectacular sites. It’s also great for exploring on your own. 😉 The historical architecture was so interesting.
Looking for nightlife? You can enjoy a meal, have some wine or go dancing in this area. There is abundant outdoor seating at various restaurants featuring string lights create a unique ambiance. For more details on the area, check out Visit Düsseldorf Old Town.
Travel Tip: Do yourself a favor and research great restaurants to try local foods such as schweinshaux (German pork knuckle), pictured below. It sounded a bit too adventurous for me but I took the risk and it was unbelievably delicious!
Where’s my luggage?!
Travel Tip: Pack an extra set of clothes (and rainjacket!) in your carry-on. You never know what can happen to your checked luggage once you leave it with the airline.
I mentioned in an earlier post: My Heart Belongs in Paris that my travel buddy didn’t have luggage. Welp, her luggage never made it during our entire stay in Europe. And guess what? She didn’t have ANYTHING but an extra sweater. I felt horrible for her. No makeup, no underclothes, no toiletries, no planned cute outfits for Paris! UGH! 😖 Even though I wanted to help, there was very little I could offer since we were not at all the same size. Luckily she was able to borrow a couple of items from other co-workers, find a mini drug store for a few things, buy a shirt and pants at a local mall and come to my room to put on my make-up every morning.
She was hopeful that her luggage would arrive. I couldn’t blame her because I wouldn’t want to spend tons of money on that stuff either! The airline kept promising her that her luggage would arrive the next day…then the next day…then the next day. You get it. IT. NEVER. CAME. Eventually, she got her luggage back, but not until she arrived back home. 🤦♀️
Rhine Tower
If you are looking for stunning views, you have to visit the Rhine Tower. Not only does it have a fantastic restaurant (worth every penny) but the tower actually rotates! The tower itself is approximately 565 feet tall and is by far Düsseldorf’s most recognizable landmark. The restaurant features 144 seats and completely rotates every 72 minutes. From the tower you can see things like Media Harbour, historic town center, Hofgarten, Königsallee and the Rhine. Highly recommended.
Fun Fact: Did you know that Germany pays women to have babies? Interesting, isn’t it?
Final Thoughts
Germany is so intriguing to me. It has been just over 1 year since I’ve been there. COVID has screwed up everything related to international travel. 😥 If I ever get the opportunity to go back, I will certainly check out Munich for Oktoberfest. The idea of dressing in a dirndl and checking out all the traditional fashion and activities while, ahem, drinking beer…is utterly dreamy.
